Having just broken his own record for wins in a season during 2008, trainer Steve Asmussen has hit the slow-mo button to start 2009. This is evidenced by the fact that Asmussen entered horses in only 10 of the 11 races Saturday at Fair Grounds.

McPeek reported that he has assumed the training of A. P. Arrow for owner Michael Paulson and that the 7-year-old horse is being pointed to the Grade 1 Donn Handicap on Jan. 31 at Gulfstream.

First-level allowance events for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles probably won't grab anyone's attention throughout much of the season. During the opening months of the Gulfstream Park meet, though, few races will receive more scrutiny than these intriguing and always-popular races for horses who have not won two races.
